"You don't learn anything until you learn it more than one way." - Marvin Minsky
I realize that part of growing up is learning to do things for yourself. I have always loved it when my children get to the age where they begin to start doing things themselves. I will never forget the day that Porter figured out how to drink out of a straw for the first time. Ryan and I were so amazed (being the first time parents we were) that one day he could not figure it out for the life of him and then the very next day he did it. He drank right out of that straw like he had been doing it all of his little life.
(And I have to admit... a bit of child independence only makes my job a little bit easier.)
So you would think that I would be thrilled that Tav is starting to want to do more and more things all by himself. He has recently become a very independent little boy. One of his favorite things has become feeding himself. He will pretty much throw a complete fit if you try and feed him something with a spoon. He HAS to do it himself... So we try and let him...
Although, as you can see...
The independent use of the spoon doesn't usually last so long. And with the spoon on the floor it becomes free game. However you can get it in...
Resulting in a HUGE, frequently sticky, MESS!
But boy, is he sure proud of himself!
We even thought a one point that maybe a bib would help...
Which I think just made him a bit crazy instead.
Just think...
One day this kid may be the waiter at your favorite restaurant!
Although he still has a lot to learn and I don't particularly enjoy cleaning up the mess... I can't help but to smile for my little Mr. Independent.

I'll have you know...when I watched him the other day, I fed him his whole bowl of mac & cheese. He didn't complain one bit!
He is so cute! I love the independece, too, but it definitely comes with a price for us mommies... at least until they get the hang of things. Amelia is sometimes the same way and won't let me feed her. Her pretty little hair doesn't make for an easy clean-up. :)
Megan, I think I may just have to send him over your way at meal times then:)
He lets me feed him most of the time too. I guess he's just not quite as independent when he's not at home. That's ok. He's getting big too fast. I want to keep him little for awhile longer. Grammy's perogative, right???
They never act the same way at home as with others. They say it's good that they feel comfortable to act out at home...it means they trust us. Maybe a little mistrust once and a while isn't such a bad thing?!!
